We look at our top five moments from Supernatural season 10, episode 16, “Paint It Black.”

Supernatural season 10, episode 16, “Paint It Black,” featured the Winchesters hunting a murderous spirit at a church and Rowena facing off against the leader of the Grand Coven. But which moments stood out from the rest?

Mother-son bonding

Crowley realizes that Rowena is chafing against her inability to practice the magic she is truly capable of and decides to give his mother a gift. “I’ve been thinking just how wretched it would be if my own raison d’etre, wreaking havoc and pain on earth, were taken from me,” he tells her before bringing in a captured Olivette, the leader of the Grand Coven, for Rowena to do with as she will. Rowena, for her part, couldn’t be more excited.

Dean’s confession

This scene went from humorous to serious pretty quickly. At first, Dean attempted to lure out their vengeful spirit by confessing to mistreating a fake girlfriend, but after that ruse, his confession turned honest. He confessed that, despite what he’s been telling Sam about the Mark of Cain, he doesn’t want to die.

“The life I live, the work I do, I pretty much just figured that that was all there was to me: Tear around and jam the key into the ignition and haul ass until I ran out of gas. I guess I just thought sooner or later I’d go out the same way that I live, pedal to the metal and that would be it,” he tells the priest, and we’re reminded of Dean in season 3 with his impending trip to Hell.

Rowena make a ‘Buffy’ reference

Rather than kill Olivette after realizing she is essentially useless to her plans, Rowena turns her into a hamster and even puts her on hamster wheel. Naturally, the only thing we can think of is Amy from Buffy: The Vampire Slayer, as Amy was a witch who spent several seasons as a rat that Willow kept in her care — complete with wheel.

Coincidence? We think not.

Sam saves the day… by reading Italian

Did anyone else notice that Sam was casually reading Isabella’s journal… in Italian? That’s right, Sam broke the case by finding Isabella’s weakness in her journal written in her native tongue. It can be easy to forget sometimes that Sam is ridiculously smart, but these reminders that the younger Winchester has a sharp mind are always welcome.

The broment

The episode closes with the traditional “broment” in the Impala, with Sam affirming his determination to save Dean from the Mark of Cain. Dean, despite his confession that he doesn’t want to die, doesn’t seem to believe Sam will be able to do anything.

This arc is definitely echoing season 3 when Sam tried and failed to save Dean from his demon deal, so we can only hope for a different ending this time with Sam actually getting to save his brother.

Supernatural airs Wednesdays at 9:00 p.m. ET on The CW.
