The Supergirl panel at the Television Critics Association press tour debuted a new trailer and offered some tidbits about the upcoming season.

We run down what we learned from Supergirl‘s TCA panel today.

Super-‘girl’

The first trailer for Supergirl featured Calista Flockhart’s Cat Grant taking back the word “girl.”

“I love that speech,” Flockhart said. “One of the things I love about this show is it’s a real celebration of girl power. I was attracted to this show because it’s something that moms and daughters can watch together.”

Added executive producer Greg Berlanti, “We knew going in that Supergirl might imply a younger audience, but we felt we could take a powerful word back and participate in introducing that to a new generation and say that doesn’t just mean young or inconsequential.

“It should be strong and bold. That was our goal. One of the blessings of what we get to do is to introduce it to a new generation, and that means changing key elements of the character and still keeping true to the core DNA of the character.”

He added that Arrow and The Flash received their own initial pushback, but he is content to let the series speak for itself, saying, “Once they watch a couple episodes they can determine for themselves what they enjoy about the show.”

Moreover, “Superwoman is a different character,” executive producer Ali Adler said.

Comics characters

Executive producer Andrew Kreisberg revealed at the panel that DC characters like Red Tornado; Kryptonian super villain Non; and General Sam Lane, Lucy and Lois Lane’s father, will be introduced during the first nine episodes of Supergirl season 1.

And of Superman, Kara’s famous cousin, “will be a factor” in Kara’s life, “but you won’t see him onscreen. He does play a part in her evolution in becoming Supergirl,” said DC Entertainment chief creative officer Geoff Johns.

Crossover with ‘Arrow,’ ‘Flash’?

According to CBS entertainment chair Nina Tassler, while Supergirl will be promoted with Arrow and The Flash, there are no plans for a crossover episode.
