With three episodes left in Supergirl season 3, we look to the episode synopses released by The CW for clues as to what might happen.

Supergirl 3×20 “Dark Side of the Moon” took season 3 in an unexpected direction. The season seemed to be building up to an ultimate showdown between Supergirl and Reign.

But the introduction of Argo City — a surviving portion of Krypton with the last living Kryptonians, including Kara’s mother, Alura — presents an entirely new wrinkle, particularly that the Dark Kryptonian in charge of the Worldkillers is alive and on the High Council in Argo City. Her name is Serena, and she cast the tie-breaking vote to give Kara some of the black rock she needed to defeat Reign.

With three episodes left, we look to the episode synopses for clues as to what may be to come.

‘Supergirl’ 3×21 ‘Not Kansas’

The synopsis for “Not Kansas” reads:

KARA CONSIDERS A MAJOR LIFE CHANGE – Kara (Melissa Benoist) makes a major life decision. Meanwhile, J’onn (David Harewood) finds out that special DEO-caliber guns have hit the streets of National City. Dermott Downs directed the episode written by Gabriel Llanas & Anna Musky-Goldwyn (#321).

Firstly, the fact that synopsis is discussing Kara making a life change when the previous episode ended in a cliffhanger with Kara and Mon-El taking on Reign seems to indicate that Reign will be defeated, at least for now. Thank you black rock?

We also know from the episode preview that the life decision Kara wants to make is to return to her people, especially her mother, and make Argo City her home. So much of Kara’s story has been about her struggle as an outsider on Earth and the necessity of hiding who she really is.

While this is also true for someone like Clark, he was sent away from Krypton as an infant so has no memories of his homeworld; Kara left at an older age so has memories of her life. The opportunity to return to the home she thought was lost would, of course, be the ultimate temptation.

And while season 1 of the series forced Kara to take her mother off the pedestal she’d put her on, the appearance of Argo City gives her the chance to finally get to know Alura as an adult. Undoubtedly, Kara’s homecoming will be short-lived, however, especially with Serena controlling Reign on Earth.

The second half of this synopsis about DEO-grade weapons going public is interesting; it looks like an opportunity to let some of the supporting characters shine while Kara is away. Hopefully this means we’ll see Martian Manhunter and Guardian in action.

‘Supergirl’ 3×22 ‘Make It Reign’

The synopsis for the penultimate episode of season 3, “Make It Reign,” reads:

SUPERGIRL PREPARES FOR BATTLE – Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) learns the true depth of Serena’s (guest star Anjali Jay) nefarious plans for Earth. Supergirl, Mon-El (Chris Wood) and Alura (guest star Erica Durance) must devise a plan to stop her before Serena gets to Earth. J’onn (David Harewood) prepares to say goodbye to his father (guest star Carl Lumby). Armen V. Kevorkian directed the episode written by Ray Utarnachitt & Cindy Lichtman (#322).

It is striking to me that while the episode title of 3×22 references Reign, the synopsis does not mention her. Instead, the focus is on Serena, the Dark Kryptonian. It’s interesting that Serena is apparently headed to Earth; we know the mission that she initially sent Reign on: to mete out justice and punish sinners. This mission is still important to her, as Kara appealing to this mission kept Reign from killing Ruby, since Ruby is an innocent.

But what might this have to do with Serena, who sent the Worldkillers to Earth as Krypton was dying? Did she send them believing she would survive the destruction? Or, now that she has survived, does she see the opportunity to use them as her weapons to, for instance, take over Earth?

It would not surprise me if Serena has a similar goal as to the Daxamites in season 2 — with Argo City’s limited capacity and resources, a new home for the Kryptonians, one in which they gain great powers from the yellow sun, would be ideal.

The second part of this synopsis sounds like M’yrnn might be dying — unless the goodbye has to do with the little clarity M’yrnn still has with his dementia. Either way, this is likely to be a terribly sad story, as J’onn only just got his father back. Contrast this with Kara getting the chance to return to her family, and it’s even sadder.

‘Supergirl’ 3×23 ‘Battles Lost and Won’

The synopsis for the season 3 finale, “Battles Lost and Won,” reads:

SHOCKING SEASON FINALE – Supergirl (Melissa Benoist) and team take on Serena in an epic battle for Earth. Jesse Warn directed the episode written by Robert Rovner & Jessica Queller (#323).

The synopsis for the finale is exceptionally vague, though it seems noteworthy that this synopsis, like the one for the penultimate episode, does not mention Reign; instead, the focus is on Serena. Might Reign be taken out of the game before the finale? And will anyone tell Clark that part of Krypton survived?

Supergirl airs Mondays at 8:00 p.m. ET on The CW.
