Dean Cain and Helen Slater have been cast in CBS’s upcoming Supergirl series.

Cain, who played Clark Kent/Superman in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman, and Slater, who played Kara/Supergirl in the 1984 Supergirl feature film, will both have recurring roles in the new series. However, the identity of those roles remains a mystery.

This won’t be the actors’ first return to the world of DC Comics, however. Cain and Slater also guest-starred on Smallville, as Dr. Cutris Knox and Lara-El respectively.

This situation reminds us of another Greg Berlanti/Andrew Kreisberg-led superhero show; John Wesley Shipp, the original television Barry Allen/Flash was cast in a mystery role in the new Flash series. He ended up being cast as Henry Allen, Barry’s father, in a recurring role.

Might this mean Cain and Slater are set to play parental roles in Kara’s (Melissa Benoist) life?

Whoever Cain and Slater are set to play, they will join a cast that includes Benoist, Mehcad Brooks (Jimmy Olsen), Laura Benanti (Alura Zor-El), Calista Flockhard (Cat Grant), Chyler Leigh (Alex Danvers) and David Harewood (Hank Henshaw).

Supergirl follows the story of Kara Zor-El. “Born on the planet Krypton, Kara Zor-El escaped amid its destruction years ago,” the series synopsis reads. “Since arriving on Earth, she’s been hiding the powers she shares with her famous cousin, Superman.

“Now 24, Kara feels un-empowered, a slave to having repressed her innate abilities. She’s still pretty, but with her face hidden behind glasses and her hair pulled back, she doesn’t know it herself. An unexpected disaster forces her to use her powers in public. Energized by her heroic deed, for the first time in her life, Kara begins embracing her extraordinary abilities. She begins helping the people of her city and they soon take notice — and she’s even given a new moniker: Supergirl.”

CBS has already given Supergirl a series commitment.
