Book-to-film adaptations take centre stage in part two of our summer reading list. Here are the adaptations that are coming up next – and why you should read them now.

‘The Sea of Monsters’ by Rick Riordan

Film release date: 7 August 2013

The second book in Rick Riordan’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians series is headed for the big screen, with Logan Lerman reprising his role of Percy Jackson. In The Sea of Monsters, Percy sets off on a new adventure to find the mythical golden fleece and stop evil in its tracks. ‘The City of Bones’ by Cassandra Clare

Film release date: 23 August 2013

City of Bones is the first book in Cassandra Clare’s The Mortal Instruments series, and is set to be released this summer as The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones. The film stars Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower as fifteen year old Clara Fray and Shadowhunter Jace Wayland. When Clara witnesses what she thinks is a murder, she is drawn into the world of the Shadowhunters – those who have dedicated themselves to destroying all demons. ‘Revenge of the Witch’ by Joseph Delaney

Film release date: 18 October 2013

The first book in Joseph Delaney’s Wardstone Chronicles has been adapted for the big screen and undergone a name change – The Seventh Son. The film has an all-star cast, featuring Jeff Bridges and Julianne Moore, with Ben Barnes playing the Seventh Son in question, Thomas Ward. When the old Spook has to retire, he turns to various apprentices to find someone able to keep evil at bay in the way he has. Eventually, there is only one apprentice left – Thomas Ward. Will he be up to the challenge?
 

‘Ender’s Game’ by Orson Scott Card

Film release date: 1 November 2013

Orson Scott Card’s masterpiece Ender’s Game is finally making its way to the big screen, after many false starts. The film stars Asa Butterfield as child prodigy Ender, with a supporting cast of Ben Kingsley, Harrison Ford and Abigail Breslin. Ender’s Game is the story of Ender, a brilliant boy who becomes the last hope against an alien threat. Ender is sent to Earth’s Battle School to train for the upcoming battle, and he may very well be the last chance humanity has to survive.
 
 

‘Catching Fire’ by Suzanne Collins

Film release date: 22 November 2013

Suzanne Collins’ brilliant Hunger Games is back on the big screen with book two, Catching Fire. Styled as The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the film will see the return Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson, and the introduction of new faces such as Sam Claflin and Philip Seymour Hoffman. If you haven’t read Catching Fire before, now is your chance – or do a re-read. ‘The Hobbit’ by J.R.R. Tolkien

Film release date: 13 December 2013

The Hobbit will be back in the holiday season with part two of Peter Jackson’s trilogy – The Desolation of Smaug. Starring Martin Freeman and Ian McKellen, and seeing the introduction of Benedict Cumberbatch as Smaug the dragon, this is a film not to be missed. Re-read The Hobbit remind yourself of the delightful journey of Bilbo Baggins, who gets caught up in a very unexpected adventure, remembering of course about the additional material Jackon has been adding in. ‘The Book Thief’ by Markus Zusak

Film release date: 17 January 2014

Markus Zusak’s awarding winning novel The Book Thief will be brought to life next year. Geoffrey Rush, Emily Watson and Sophie Nélisse are all set to bring this breathtaking story to life. Read the book now, and experience the story of Liesel, a young girl in World War II Germany, who takes to stealing books to find comfort. When her family takes in a a Jewish man to hide, all of their lives are forced to change. This is unlike any book you have ever read, so make sure to read it before you get to see it on the big screen.
 

‘Vampire Academy’ by Richelle Mead

Film release date: 14 February 2014

Richelle Mead’s novel will be adapted as Vampire Academy: Blood Sisters, with Zoey Deutch, Danila Kozlovsky, Lucy Fry and Dominic Sherwood taking the lead roles. Mead’s first novel in the Vampire Academy series is the story of best friends Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess, and Rose, her half-human/half-vampire bodyguard. It is Rose’s job to protect Lissa from the dangerous Strigoi vampires, a job that becomes a lot more difficult when the two friends are dragged back to the boarding school they had escaped from. ‘The Maze Runner’ by James Dashner

Film release date: 14 February 2014

The Maze Runner is a dystopian novel set in a post-apocalyptic world. The film is currently set for a 2014 release, and stars Dylan O’Brien as Thomas, with Thomas Brodie-Sangster and Kaya Scodelario in supporting roles. Notably, author James Dashner also contributed to the screenplay for The Maze Runner. The novel follows Thomas, who has woken up in a world he doesn’t know with no memory aside from his first name. He soon discovers other children in this world with him, and begins to realise that they are all being held, trapped, in the centre of a maze.
 

‘Divergent’ by Veronica Roth

Film release date: 21 March 2014

Veronica Roth’s breakout hit Divergent is coming to a cinema near you – and it is set to be as successful a film as it was a book. The film wil star Shailene Woodley and Theo James, with Kate Winslet and Jai Courtney supporting. Now is the perfect time to read Divergent, not only will you be prepared for the movie, but you can get ready for Allegiant, the final book in the trilogy. ‘The Fault in Our Stars’ by John Green

Film status: Pre-production

John Green’s best-selling novel The Fault in Our Stars may only be in pre-production, however now is the time to read it. The film has already cast Shailene Woodley and Ansel Elgort as young cancer patients Hazel and Augustus. When Hazel meets Augustus at a cancer support group, neither of them realise just how they will go on to changes the lives of the other.
