Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story has added several performers to the cast and chorus of West Side Story, snagging performers from Broadway and TV alike.

The remake of the classic musical West Side Story has added several new additions to the cast and chorus. While some key parts have already been cast like Maria (Rachel Zegler) and Tony (Ansel Elgort) Anita (Ariana DeBose), and Valentina (Rita Moreno), some exciting new appointments have just been announced.

As Deadline reports, Mike Faist will be playing the leader of the Jets, Riff. Faist is known for his work on the Broadway productions of Dear Evan Hansen and Newsies. Ana Isabelle, a Puerto Rican singer and dancer, will play Maria’s work friend, Rosalie. Finally, Dance Moms alum and Sia’s favorite dance double, Maddie Ziegler has been cast as one of the Jets.

And while the casting of some truly talented actors, singers, and dancers that we’ve loved on other shows is awesome, Spielberg’s West Side Story is also tapping into new onscreen talent to build the rest of the chorus. As Deadline explains, over 40 performers have been added to round out the chorus, and they are all new faces to the world of cinema.

Spielberg and his team made a huge, nationwide search for performers, and found a lot of talented individuals with extensive musical theater backgrounds, but no on-screen experience. However, the team was more concerned with finding actors who could truly deliver amazing acting, singing, and dancing skills rather than finding people with a long film resume. As the film’s choreographer, Justin Peck explained, “One of our largest priorities was to find a caliber of triple-threats who could bring this film to life with great proficiency”

We’re so excited to see some of our faves onscreen in this iconic musical, and we can’t wait to meet the talented individuals rounding out the Sharks and the Jets. West Side Story is set to start filming this summer.
