Roald Dahl’s The BFG is being adapted by Steven Spielberg, who has found his Sophie in 10-year-old Ruby Barnhill.

The newest rising star in Hollywood is British actress Ruby Barnhill, aged 10, who will be playing the lead role in Steven Spielberg’s The BFG (short for “The Big Friendly Giant”).

Roald Dahl’s beloved children’s classic follows Sophie (Barnhill) who befriends a friendly giant, and defeats the man-eating evil giants with the help of the Queen of England.

Steven Spielberg is taking on the movie adaptation, which is set to premiere on July 1, 2016.

“After a lengthy search, I feel Roald Dahl himself would have found Ruby every bit as marvelous as we do,” Steven Spielberg says in a press release. “We have discovered a wonderful Sophie in Ruby Barnhill.”

Barnhill has been acting for two years, and can next be seen in the BBC series The Four O’Clock Club.

Of her first feature film role, she says, “I feel incredibly lucky and I’m so happy. Sophie gets to go on this wonderful adventure and I’m so excited that I get to play her.”

The BFG is produced by DreamWorks Studios, and written by Melissa Mathison. Mark Rylance has already been cast as the BFG.
