We’ve known for months that Spielberg has been itching to start his Robopocalypse science fiction piece, but aside from the name and the knowledge that it would be based off of the novel by Daniel H. Wilson we’ve had no clue as to how Spielberg would interpret it.

It’s good to see Spielberg jumping on the ol’ science fiction standby again, particularly since his films have a habit of standing the test of time. We know that Artificial Intelligence is a passionate muse of his (heck, he made a movie called A.I.) so it’ll be interesting to see what is sure to be a raw and gritty exploration of the possibility of a robot apocalypse. Check out the quote from Spielberg to Time Out London (via Screenrant) below!

‘It’s a movie about a global war between man and machine. I had a great time creating the future on “Minority Report”, and it’s a future that is coming true faster than any of us thought it would. “Robopocalypse” takes place in 15 or 20 years, so it’ll be another future we can relate to. It’s about the consequences of creating technologies which make our lives easier, and what happens when that technology becomes smarter than we are. It’s not the newest theme, it’s been done throughout science fiction, but it’s a theme that becomes more relevant every year.’

Spielberg is currently busy directing Lincoln and swimming in a pool of money from all of that sweet sweet Tin Tin money, but filming should be beginning fairly soon if it plans to make good on its July 3, 2013 release date.

So what do you think? Are you tired of robotic uprising movies by this point? A short list includes 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Terminator franchise and I, Robot just to name a few. What are your favorite robot apocalypse films? What will Spielberg add to the genre that we’ve never seen before?
