Well this doesn’t sound promising. Directors Steven Spielberg and George Lucas have made some interesting (and somewhat scary) statements regarding the future of the movie industry.

THR is reporting that Spielberg, who was speaking at an opening of a new USC School of Cinematic Arts building, says that pretty soon there will be price variances for movies when we arrive to the box offices:

“You’re gonna have to pay $25 for the next Iron Man, you’re probably only going to have to pay $7 to see Lincoln.”

George Lucas parroted Spielberg’s claims saying that he predicts fewer movies will be released, will stay in theaters longer and cost more.

Spielberg told the University of Southern California students to expect a huge change in the movie industry coming soon when several high-budget movies crash and burn:

“That’s the big danger, and there’s eventually going to be an implosion — or a big meltdown. There’s going to be an implosion where three or four or maybe even a half-dozen megabudget movies are going to go crashing into the ground, and that’s going to change the paradigm.”

Lucas also says that cable networks are a much more adventurous way to make movies with Spielberg interjecting that Lincoln was very close to being an HBO exclusive rather than a feature film release.

Neither director seemed to offer any ideas for how to avoid the movie industry plummeting in to a darkness according to the report.

What are your thoughts about Lucas and Spielberg’s prediction of the movie industry? Would you pay $25 to see Iron Man?
