On the heels of his success with Lincoln, Steven Spielberg has chosen his next directorial project: American Sniper. It is aiming to be released in early 2014.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Spielberg’s next film will be American Sniper. American Sniper will be based off of the book of the same name. American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History was written by former U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle. Bradley Cooper will play Kyle and has been developing the film as a producer. Spielberg, Andrew Lazar, and Peter Morgan will also produce.

It’s a big deal whenever legendary director decides to direct a project. Not many directors have that ability, but Spielberg can attach himself to just about anything. He obviously must feel strongly about the potential American Sniper holds. Just last month we took a look the top 10 films directed by Steven Spielberg and scored by John Williams. The two are long time collaborators, and Williams will undoubtedly score American Sniper as well.

The book spent 18 weeks on the New York Times best seller list. It has been praised. “American Sniper is the inside story of what it’s like to be in war. A brave warrior and patriot, Chris Kyle writes frankly about the missions, personal challenges, and hard choices that are part of daily life of an elite SEAL Sniper. It’s a classic!” (RICHARD MARCINKO (USN, Ret.), First Commanding Officer of SEAL Team Six and #1 bestselling author of Rogue Warrior).
