In a new interview, the show-runner described how writing Amy and Rory’s final episode proved “difficult,” and explained the reasoning behind abruptly and completely changing their departure.

Speaking to Digital Spy, The Moff admitted that writing “The Angels Take Manhattan” was “difficult” because he didn’t want to “make a mess of it.” But as far as the Sherlock co-creator is concerned, he nearly did: “I completely changed the ending as I was writing it, thinking No, I’ve got it wrong… I’m on the wrong emphasis,” he said while promoting the series at a BFI screening earlier this week. Don’t worry though, Whovians – Moffat promised the Pond swansong is “a good one, and it’s properly emotional.”
