Steve Carell is such a tease! But we love him. And also, we’re a little relieved that his tweet about The Office returning was actually a joke.

Wednesday at the TCAs brought a huge announcement for fans of a beloved NBC sitcom: Will and Grace, whose core cast reunited in 2016 for an election special, will be back for 10 brand new episodes.

Will & Grace is the latest in a long line of TV revivals that include The X-Files, Full House, Gilmore Girls and Boy Meets World.

Therefore, it was with somewhat wary acceptance that we — and many others — found ourselves immediately accepting Steve Carell’s tweet at face value:

It was a joke, of course — there’s no news about The Office returning, and even if there was, we doubt Steve Carell would come back seeing as his character Michael Scott backed out of the original series after season 7.

Carell didn’t wait long before adding his clarification:

Some people are now furious (#DunderMifflinForever), but others are relieved. After all, as amazing as The Office was, most fans would agree it definitely overstayed its welcome, and most of the stars — perhaps most notably Mindy Kaling, whose comedy The Mindy Project is going strong on Hulu — have moved on to other things.

But maybe we’re wrong — maybe a reunion special would be exactly what The Office needed to make up for its lacklustre final seasons?

Meanwhile, we’ll just have to make due with the other office comedy coming to NBC: Powerless, the DC Universe sitcom starring Alan Tudyk as Batman’s dimwit cousin Van Wayne.
