Fickle Fish Films has optioned the rights to Mindy McGinnis’ debut YA novel Not a Drop to Drink, a survival story set in a world where freshwater is almost nonexistent.

Not a Drop to Drink is the story of Lynn, a girl who must protect her pond in a world where the only focus is survival. Water is a rarity in Lynn’s world and she must keep her pond safe at any cost, even killing those who threaten her way of life.

Wisps of smoke on the horizon mean one thing: strangers. The mysterious footprints by the pond, nighttime threats, and gunshots make it all too clear Lynn has exactly what they want, and they won’t stop until they get it.

Not a Drop to Drink is a dystopian novel similar to The 5th Wave, although there isn’t as much action, and Orleans. It definitely contains the elements of popular adaptions: strong female heroine, a dystopian/apocalyptic world in which she needs to fight for something, and a romance.

Megan Hibbett from Fickle Fish Films said, “Mindy’s unique voice made for a truly riveting read; this story seamlessly blends gritty and dangerous dystopian realism with the larger themes of life vs. survival that we feel audiences will really respond to.”

Author Mindy McGinnis is excited by the prospect of her novel coming to the big screen. “As an author, to have another author like Stephenie Meyer as part of the producing team gives me confidence that the source material is in good hands. I’m thrilled about this opportunity to put DRINK in front of a wider audience.”

Not a Drop to Drink was released by HarperCollins in September and its companion novel In a Handful of Dust is available for pre-order now.
