Danish director Nikolaj Arcel is being tapped to direct the adaptation of Stephen King’s The Dark Tower.

Sony is taking on the monumental task of bringing Stephen King’s iconic The Dark Tower universe to the big screen.

Centering on main character Roland Deschain (the Gunslinger), the first movie will hopefully launch a franchise of films spanning the entire eight-novel series.

The Dark Tower adaptation has been in the works for a long time, but the project keeps falling apart. Back in 2007, J.J. Abrams and Damon Lindelof were gearing up to take on the project, but unfortunately it didn’t work out.

Now, however, it seems like things are finally heating up, with the latest draft of the script written by Fringe‘s Akiva Goldsman and Jeff Pinkner.

Deadline reports that Sony is considering Danish director Nikolaj Arcel to helm the project: the deal would involve him overseeing a rewrite of the script, and directing the first movie.

Nikolaj Arcel made his international debut with A Royal Affair back in 2012, after making a name for himself as co-writer of the original Swedish The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

He also directed the acclaimed Danish drama The Truth about Men, and wrote last year’s smash hit The Pheasant Killers.

Arcel is a self-confessed Dark Tower superfan, and anecdotally taught himself English in order to consume Stephen King’s series in its original language.

As Deadline notes, the next move for Sony is finding a well-established actor to headline the franchise. Both Javier Bardem and Russell Crowe are allegedly being considered for the lead character, the titular Gunslinger.
