Stephen Colbert, a self-proclaimed fan of The Hobbit and the full works of J.R.R. Tolkien, has been confirmed to make an appearance in Peter Jackson’s latest Tolkien-based film series.

It recently came out that faux-Right-Wing comedy reporter Stephen Colbert had taken some time to fly to New Zealand and visit the set of The Hobbit, but no word was given on if he had a little more than a backstage pass. In an earlier issue of Playboy, Colbert was asked about his excursion to New Zealand.

“Peter Jackson invited me to the set last year,I flew out and watched them shoot some scenes and went to some locations.” said Colbert. “I saw a 25-minute cut, and it was amazing. Jackson knows I’m a big fan of the films.”

When asked if he would make an appearance, Colbert just gave them a knowing smile and said, “Could be.”

Sneaky move, Colbert.

Now The Hollywood Reporter has it that Colbert will indeed be officially added to the roster of Middle-Earth citizens. From a source that they can’t reveal, they claim that Colbert will be in a Hobbit movie, just not the one coming out this Christmas.

We’ll have to wait a whole year after The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey for The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug to see Colbert dressed up as a dwarf, or an elf, or what have you.

Personally, we’d like to see Colbert put the evil dragon Smaug on the ThreatDown. He’ll probably end up in just a small cameo role, but as long as he has a line we’ll be happy. Do you think he’ll retain any of his Colbert-ish demeanor for the role?

Who will Colbert be playing in ‘The Hobbit’?
