Tolkien superfan Stephen Colbert is saying goodbye to The Hobbit and Middle-earth in the best way possible: by dressing up as Bilbo, Legolas and Gandalf.

…Oh, and there’s an article, too.

This week’s Entertainment Weekly magazine celebrates the premiere of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies, which concludes Peter Jackson’s second and final trilogy in the world of Middle-earth.

To honour the final instalment, EW has enlisted superfan Stephen Colbert (who also moderated this year’s The Hobbit panel at Comic-Con) to write the commencement speech, as it were.

He is also featured on the cover of the issue. There are three collectible covers to choose from, featuring Colbert as Legolas, Bilbo and Gandalf:

A snippet of the article has also been posted on the Entertainment Weekly website. It clearly shows Colbert’s love for, and extensive knowledge of, the series:

“Tolkien’s work has been a lifelong haven for me — truly a light in dark places when all other lights went out. For an awkward teenager, Middle-earth was a world I could escape to. Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth also gave me a world to escape to, but by the time his films came out, I was rich and famous and didn’t really want to escape my life anymore. Still, great movies.”

Hilariously, EW also has a gallery of candids revealing Colbert being silly while wearing the costumes. See some of them below, and head over to their website for the rest!

This is definitely a treat for Colbert fans! Are you going to pick up these (awesome, yet slightly disturbing) covers?

Bonus question: so, do you think Stephen Colbert just brought these outfits from home, or…?

Entertainment Weekly’s The Hobbit issue is in stores Friday, Dec. 12.
