Leave it to proud nerd Stephen Colbert to explain why the new lightsaber in the Star Wars: The Force Awakens trailer makes perfect sense.

On a new episode of The Colbert Report this week, the outgoing Comedy Central entertainer looked at the new Star Wars trailer’s lightsaber controversy.

Colbert uses the fact that he’s been a Star Wars fan two weeks longer than any of us to explain why the new lightsaber is capable of having a cross guard that won’t endanger the user. “The metal hilts are just casings around the little beams to protect your hand,” he said to laughs from an unsuspecting audience. “Even if someone slices through the metal, they’re going to hit the beam right there. Any Padawan knows that.”

We’re hoping that these types of nerdy rants will be carried over to Colbert’s Late Show when he takes over for David Letterman next year. It’d be a great way to appeal to a younger audience and compete with Jimmy Fallon’s Tonight Show.
