The Colbert Report kicked off its Thursday night episode with a nod to the news that David Letterman is leaving The Late Show.

Staying in character as he usually does, Colbert did not specifically talk about the announcement yesterday that revealed he would be the one who’s replacing Letterman when he departs The Late Show next year.

“He influenced every host who came after him, and even a few who came before him,” Colbert said of Letterman. “He’s that good. And I’ve got to tell you… I do not envy whoever they put in that chair,” Colbert said to huge applause.

After this small introduction, Colbert continued with his show as normal.

Despite no official comment on his show, Colbert did offer a statement in yesterday’s press release. “Simply being a guest on David Letterman’s show has been a highlight of my career,” he said. “I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave’s lead. I’m thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth.”

We suspect that Colbert will slip out of character at some point to talk on Colbert Report about his move to CBS and to thank his fans, Comedy Central, and Jon Stewart.

The Colbert Report is expected to end before 2014 comes to a close.
