Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly are looking to reunite under their Step Brothers director Adam McKay, but it won’t be for Step Brothers 2.

According to Deadline, Adam McKay, known for directing both Anchorman movies, Step Brothers, The Other Guys, and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby, is looking to direct Sony’s comedy Border Guards.

McKay would like the comedy to star Step Brothers and Talladega Nights duo Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly.

Ferrell and McKay are already producing the project, but they have yet to decide to be more intimately involved with the project. It’s likely that it could happen, but it all depends on what other projects may come up while the Border Guards script is being written as well as the eventual strength of the script.

The Border Guards script is currently being written by British writer Jesse Armstrong. The plot reportedly revolves around “two hapless but earnest friends who decide to give purpose to their lives by protecting America’s borders from illegal immigrants. In the process they find themselves accidentally stranded in Mexico without identification and must sneak back into the U.S.”

It’s not Step Brothers 2, but a re-teaming of Ferrell and Reilly under McKay’s direction is certainly a good thing.

Sadly, it seems that Step Brothers 2 will never come to fruition. After Anchorman 2, McKay said he has no intention of ever doing a sequel again.

“No, that’s the last sequel we’re gonna do,” McKay told Empire. “There’s nothing more fun to me than new characters and a new world. And now we’re releasing this alt version [of Anchorman 2], we’re totally satisfied. No Anchorman 3.”

We certainly can’t be mad at McKay for not doing sequels. Though we would like to see more from some of our favorite characters, sequels have a better shot to do well financially and new films are always a bigger risk, so we applaud McKay.
