Steam’s annual holiday sale begins today, offering PC gamers the chance to download dozens of games at ridiculously low prices. Titles on sale include XCOM: Enemy Unknown, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and a small discount on the recently released Lego: The Lord of the Rings.

Further deals available on Valve’s ever-popular digital distribution platform range from 25% off Dishonored, Fallout: New Vegas (40% off) and Portal 2 is at half price.

The current daily deals include the Hitman, Prince of Persia and Borderlands franchises, Scribblenauts Unlimited and Mirror’s Edge. We particularly recommend trying to get hold of Batman: Arkham City, which is currently on a flash deal.

For this sale, the community choice system also returns, where gamers can vote for the games they would like to see next slashed in price.

Publisher packs also make a comeback; Steam users can pick up Bethesda, Valve, Ubisoft and Sega collections (amongst others), for a greatly reduced price. Further, there is a pack of thirty indie games, including Bastion, Orcs Must Die! 2, Limbo and Trine 2, available for $70 (£50).

As always, if there’s a specific game you’re looking to pick up, we recommend that you wait until the final day to purchase it, unless it’s a flash or daily deal. Many games that have modest discounts throughout the sale will have deeper price cuts as part of these special deals.

To browse the full selection of games in the sale, open Steam or head over to the Steam website.

The beginning of the Steam holiday sale comes only a day after the seventh Humble Indie Bundle was made available for purchase. The bundle, which includes Legend of Grimrock and The Binding of Isaac, has already generated over $1 million of revenue for indie developers and charities in just twenty-four hours.

If you still have money left over from all your other Christmas shopping, what games are you planning on picking up?
