Filming for the upcoming Starz original series adaptation of Diana Gabaldon’s Outlander began in early October 2013. Since then, we’ve only been given glimpses of sets and locations and every once in a while an exciting photo of Claire and Jamie.

Fans have patiently waited for a trailer of the highly anticipated television show, and on Saturday, January 11, 2014 Starz delivered. The trailer debuted at a fan gathering in Los Angeles where members of the cast and creative shared concept art, answered fan questions and gave updates on their progress so far.

In attendance were Diana Gabaldon, executive producer/writer Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica) and the two stars of the show, Sam Heughan (Jamie) and Caitriona Balfe (Claire). The trailer, a 48-second teaser, opens up with a look at the standing stones of Craigh na Dun. It’s a great introduction to a complex story about Claire’s accidental time travel to 1743.

From the event on Saturday, we know that filming hasn’t gotten very far (they haven’t even filmed the wedding yet!) so we can expect a longer trailer with more Jamie in the next couple months. Still no specific air date was given but they plan to have it out by the summer of this year.

Five interesting facts about ‘Outlander’

Cameo appearance
At Friday’s news conference, Diana revealed that she will be making a cameo appearance on the show. She’s been given two lines to say in one scene. Not much else was said about Diana’s part but I’m very excited to see that the production is keeping her involved with the show. She is given all the scripts to read in advance and so far she hasn’t noticed anything really significant missing.

Flashbacks
From the panel at New York Comic Con, we know that they plan to include flashbacks of Claire and Frank so that the viewer can visually see the internal conflict Claire fights. She struggles with trying to find a way home, back to Frank, but at the same time she doesn’t want to leave Jamie. We will also get to see Jamie before he became an outlaw. Two specific scenes in general: when Jonathan Randall (aka Black Jack) comes to make trouble at Lallybroch and the whipping at Fort William.

Seasons
For consistency and convenience, the creators decided to switch the seasons. Since filming began in the fall – so will the story. Meaning, when Claire falls through the stones it will be around Sanheim not Beltane.

Sex and Violence
Moore explained that they aren’t adding any more sex and violence to the show. What Diana wrote is what is and will be written into the scripts. So there will be lots of sex and violence.

Diana’s Inspiration
Doctor Who. Diana was inspired while watching a Classic Doctor Who episode about the Doctor traveling to the 18th Century where he meets up with a Jacobite Scot named Jamie MacCrimmon. Not knowing anything about that time and place, Diana decided she was going to write a novel. If only it were that easy.
