TalkFine, the electro-pop due featuring StarKid’s Clark Baxtresser, has released “Dance Like This,” a new single with a giant sound. We chatted with Clark about the new track, which features production by EarthMoonEarth.

Clark Baxtresser is best known, in internet-land, as a part of Team StarKid. He’s served as the musical director on several musicals and live tours, and was one of the composers for A Very Potter Senior Year – he even sang as Harry on that show’s official recording. But along with Pierce Siebers (who also contributed to AVPSY), he also fronts new York-based electro-pop band TalkFine, who were recently named Artist of the Month in NYC’s Deli Magazine. “Dance Like This” is a new single from the duo, and we spoke with Clark about the release and the noticeable growth of TalkFine’s sound.

Hypable: Tell me about this song!

Clark: We originally wrote this song with the intention of it being included in our last release, Lesser Known Hits. Jack Stratton, the producer of Lesser Known Hits, actually did a version for this song that went in a total old school, 90’s hip-hop, new jack swing type of thing which we loved but eventually decided that it didn’t belong in the collection. So, months later, we sent the track to our friends EarthMoonEarth on a whim, without any big expectations or anything. But then, months after that, they got back to us with what the track sounds like now, this huge, dance-floor banger and we were totally blown away.

Hypable: Is it a stand-alone, or in advance of a new album?

Clark: We currently don’t have plans to include this in any sort of larger release but it definitely reflects a more pop-driven sound that we’re aiming for. And we especially love working with EarthMoonEarth and plan to continue that collaboration in the future.

Hypable: For the people out there that don’t know that much about the specifics of dance music production – when you say “produced by,” it doesn’t mean “produced” in the way a producer works with an artist on creating a song or album from scratch. Here, EarthMoonEarth has taken a song that you recorded and re-created it, added effects, things like that. It’s more like what I think of labelling a “remix,” except without hearing the original, right?

Clark: You’re viewing it right. You would hear, in the original version, that the vibe is pretty different. EarthMoonEarth kept some of our sounds but changed a lot of them, enhanced the vocal sound, added important rhythmic articulation points. It’s very much their creation as much as it is ours.

Given that most StarKid fans initially experienced TalkFine by watching the adorable, home-recorded pop cover videos that the band periodically posts on their YouTube channel, “Dance Like This” may hit you with a feeling of sheer shock. The track has a gigantic sound, and while the band’s past releases, The Moment EP (2011) and Lesser Known Hits (2012) have a fresh and charming indie-pop sound, this is a radio-ready dance single, something you can imagine being played over a massive club scene in a film. It basically sounds like a massive hit by really famous people, which hopefully, it will become.

You can get “Dance Like This,” as well as more of TalkFine’s music (recommended tracks: “The Water’s Getting Too Hot” and “The Moment”) on their Bandcamp, or on iTunes. You can also hear more from the LA-based production team EarthMoonEarth on SoundCloud.
