Team StarKid veteran A.J. Holmes will today join the national tour of Tony-winning musical The Book of Mormon, in the starring role of Elder Cunningham.

StarKid’s A.J. Holmes will join the 2nd official national Broadway tour of The Book of Mormon in the lead role of Elder Cunningham. His first show will be today, and A.J. will stay with the production until January 12, performing in tour stops Omaha, Denver and San Francisco.

A.J.’s recent theater credits include the lead role of Frederick in 2011’s Young Frankenstein national tour and Henry in two regional productions of Next To Normal. In May of this year, he joined the Chicago production of The Book of Mormon as a standby for Elder Cunningham, covering the role several times.

A.J. Holmes, alongside Darren Criss, composed the music for A Very Potter Musical, the show that made Team StarKid an online success. He also contributed to the group’s original musical Me and My Dick, and to StarKid’s final Potter show, A Very Potter Senior Year, as both a composer and actor. He most recently returned to Team StarKid as the composer for 2013’s Twisted, which ran in Chicago at the same time A.J. himself was working as a member of Chicago’s The Book of Mormon company.

Penned by South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, The Book of Mormon follows the story of two young Mormon missionaries, the ambitious and deluded Elder Price and the incompetent and earnest Elder Cunningham, as they are sent to Uganda on their first “mission,” and discover that the real world is a lot harsher than their training has lead them to believe. The show picked up nine Tonys, including Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Score.

The Book of Mormon, starring A.J. Holmes, opens at Omaha’s Orpheum Theater tonight.
