Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke is jumping back into the world of adapting YA literature with Jerry Spinelli’s Stargirl.

The beloved book follows a homeschooled girl who enrolls at Mica High School and becomes a spectacle thanks to her “burst of color and sound”… until the students turn against her for being unique.

According to Variety, Hardwicke “was quick to sign on for the project after reading [Kristin] Hahn’s script.”

Stargirl has been a huge hit since 2000 (It’s currently #1 on Amazon’s “Children’s Peer Pressure Books” list). A sequel was published in 2007 titled Love, Stargirl.

Did you read/love ‘Stargirl’?

We can’t wait to see what Hardwicke does with the story because we know this book is special to a lot of people. Stargirl’s full synopsis is below (via Amazon):

“Stargirl. From the day she arrives at quiet Mica High in a burst of color and sound, the hallways hum with the murmur of ‘Stargirl, Stargirl.’ She captures Leo Borlock’s heart with just one smile. She sparks a school-spirit revolution with just one cheer. The students of Mica High are enchanted. At first.

“Then they turn on her. Stargirl is suddenly shunned for everything that makes her different, and Leo, panicked and desperate with love, urges her to become the very thing that can destroy her: normal. In this celebration of nonconformity, Newbery Medalist Jerry Spinelli weaves a tense, emotional tale about the perils of popularity and the thrill and inspiration of first love.”
