The new Stargirl trailer from Disney+ gave us our first look at Grace VanderWaal as the titular character in this Jerry Spinelli adaptation.

Though most people likely got Disney+ to watch shows set in and connected to the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Star Wars universe, Disney+ isn’t all spinoff series based on its two biggest IPs.

Like Netflix, the streaming service also has original feature films, one of of which is the upcoming Stargirl, an adaptation of Jerry Spinelli’s best-selling coming of age young adult novel of the same name.

Described as a tender and offbeat coming-of-age story, Stargirl follows a quiet high schooler who finds himself drawn to the free-spirited new girl in his town — the titular Stargirl — and finds himself, and his world, changed by her unconventional ways.

Stargirl follows Leo Borlock, an average student at Mica High School who gets decent grades, is a member of the school’s marching band and has always been content flying under the radar. However, all that changes when he meets Stargirl Caraway, a confident and colorful new student with a penchant for the ukulele, who stands out in a crowd.

She is kind, finds magic in the mundane, and touches the lives of others with the simplest of gestures. Her eccentricities and infectious personality charm Leo and the student body, and she quickly goes from being ignored and ridiculed to accepted and praised, then back again, sending Leo on a rollercoaster ride of emotions.

Stargirl stars singer-songwriter and youngest winner ever of America’s Got Talent Grace VanderWaal as Stargirl Caraway; Graham Verchere, from Fargo and The Good Doctor, as Leo Borlock; and Emmy nominee Giancarlo Esposito, of Breaking Bad and The Mandalorian, as Archie Brubaker. It also features Karan Brar (Diary of a Wimpy Kid) as Kevin, Darby Stanchfield (Scandal) as Gloria and Maximiliano Hernandez (Scandal) as Mr. Rabineau.

Stargirl is directed by Julia Hart, who is best known for the underrated 2018 film Fast Color and 2016’s Miss Stevens . The screenplay was written by Kristin Hahn, Julia Hart and Jordan Horowitz.

Stargirl begins streaming on March 13th on Disney+.
