The Starcrossed pilot from the CW was screened at Comic-Con today, and it was not what one would hope for. Filled with teen angst and every cliche known in teen drama, one can only hope that the second episode has something different to offer.

Starcrossed starts with the invasion – an alien spacecraft crash-lands in a small town. Whether they came in peace or with more sinister intentions didn’t matter: a fierce battle erupted as humans fought for control over their new rivals, an alien species called the Atrians.

In the middle of this conflict Emery and Roman, an atrian, meet while he is hiding in her family’s shed. They are six, and she is kind to him. Roman is found and captured right before her eyes. Ten years later, the Atrians have been acclimated to life on Earth, but they are interned in a heavily-guarded camp known as the Sector to keep them separate from humans. Now, for the first time, a group of Atrian teens will enroll in a suburban human high school with the goal of testing the feasibility of human/alien integration. The eyes of the nation and the whole world are fixed on this historical social experiment, an endeavor fraught with suspicion and fear.

The integration aspect of the show is very reminiscent of the integration of schools in the 1960’s and while that portion of the pilot was realistic, there were many issues with the show. The anger portrayed by the teens towards the Atrians was over the top to the extreme. Everything from the bully guys to the popular mean girl is a caricature of characters we see all the time.

There isn’t really a lot to recommend this show. The plot is the typical love triangle that has been beaten to death. Yes, there are aliens which makes it slightly intriguing, but all they do is angst like the humans. The only thing more plastic than their looks is the dialogue. The acting isn’t the issue so much as the material they are given. Aimee Teegarden, Matt Lanter, and Grey Damon all create characters that could be interesting if their stories were fresher.

Starcrosssed doesn’t air until mid-season. It will be interesting to see how others feel about the new show when they finally see it.

The series stars Aimee Teegarden (“Friday Night Lights”) as Emery, Matt Lanter (“90210”) as Roman, Grey Damon (“The Secret Circle”) as Grayson, Natalie Hall (“Pretty Little Liars”) as Taylor, Malese Jow (“The Vampire Diaries,” “Big Time Rush”) as Julia, Titus Makin, Jr. (“Glee”) as Lukas, Chelsea Gilligan (“How I Met Your Mother”) as Teri, and Greg Finley (“The Secret Life of the American Teenager”) as Drake.
