The first Star Wars: The Force Awakens teaser trailer has been released, and it looks epic. We take a look at some specific shots of the trailer and speculate about what that new lightsaber could be.

In case you missed the first Star Wars: The Force Awakens teaser trailer, be sure to go watch it before you continue reading, as we’ll be discussing different parts of the trailer below.

This highly anticipated trailer has been talked about for the last year, and director J.J. Abrams didn’t disappoint as this teaser trailer did its job perfectly. While it didn’t show a ton of footage, or explain any plot, it gets fans in the mood for the new film, and it shows us some exciting new additions to the story.

We’ll start with possibly the most interesting shot from Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ teaser trailer:

New (or ancient) lightsaber

We don’t know who the Sith will be, but there has been some speculation that it could be an ancient or forgotten evil, which is why we could be seeing an early rendition of the lightsaber here. While most people think this is an updated lightsaber, it could actually be one that more resembles the swords of old, and that’s why it has a crossguard on the handle. Fans may also notice its light looks more jagged, which could be a style choice by Abrams or could hint at being an earlier version of the weapon.

We hope there is some great backstory to this character and his weapon, as that’s what will bring this movie home. Learning about the history of the force and weapons that could have made it into the time when the force awakens will be very exciting. We don’t know who this character is yet, but it could be actor Adam Driver playing the part.

Daisy Ridley speeds off

We see actress Daisy Ridley in this next shot, riding what is definitely a new vehicle, but it’s great that things still look nice and rusty. While discussing this with another writer, we agreed that CGI always looks better when there is some grit involved, making something extraordinary feel a bit more real.

Ridley will be one of the other main stars of the film, and while we don’t know who she’ll be playing yet, she certainly seems like she’s in a hurry in the scene from the first teaser trailer. There are rumors that Ridley will be playing Han Solo and Leia’s daughter, which would be an incredible way to interweave some storylines.

We love the styling here though, as it feels a lot like when Anakin was visiting his mother on Tatooine (it’s possible it is Tatooine). We look forward to finding out more about her character, and how she’ll be linked to her co-star John Boyega’s character.

John Boyega, the Stormtrooper?

Actor John Boyega will apparently be playing a Stormtrooper at some point, or maybe he’s simply disguised as one. What we know for sure is he ends up in the desert, with remnants of the Stormtrooper suit on. Maybe he gets “awakened” by The Force, and that’s what causes him to react the way he does in the shot above.

He will look to be one of the main characters in this film, although we have a feeling this film will be much more of an ensemble than most other movies we’re accustomed to seeing — think Guardians of the Galaxy.

Oscar Isaac ready to take off

Oscar Isaac recently signed on to play a villain in X-Men: Apocalypse, but it looks like he’ll be flying an X-wing Starfighter as a rebel alliance character in this sequel. Could he be a Jedi? Who knows, but what we do know is that Star Wars: The Force Awakens is a better movie with Isaac in the film. We hope he’s more than just a supporting character, and he looks great with his rebel alliance Starfighter attire.

Millenium Falcon looks epic, but who’s piloting it?

The Millenium Falcon was always going to make a grand appearance in this film, but this ship has some rough lightyears on it, so who is piloting this beast as it dives and barrel rolls around in the first trailer? It’s hard to know, but we do know some of the older characters will be making an appearance in this film, it’ll just have to be a surprise as to who is piloting the memorable spacecraft.

As for how it looks after all these years, it seems a bit more polished than the other vehicles we saw in the trailer, so maybe Han Solo has kept it stored properly (somehow we doubt that). Either way, the Falcon is a welcomed sight in a film that aims to be the start of a new Star Wars era.

This isn’t the droid you’re rolling for

We see a new droid in the film, which is rolling across the desert and looking fairly interesting (read: soccer ball). Droids have always been a big part of the Star Wars franchise, and we imagine this little guy will end up being a big part of the film.

He wouldn’t have been given the spotlight in the teaser if they didn’t plan on using him quite a bit in the film, so we look forward to finding out what its name is and how he’ll aid the film’s heroes. Look for even more droids to be introduced, as they’ve always played integral roles in previous Star Wars films, especially filling comedic roles.

Is that Benedict Cumberbatch we hear?

Update: Numerous reliable outlets are reporting that the voice in the trailer is Andy Serkis, but we still don’t know what role he’ll play.

The voiceover at the beginning of Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ first teaser trailer has proven quite difficult to decipher. We hear what sounds a bit like a raspy Benedict Cumberbatch, or Andy Serkis depending on who you ask, but it could also be actor Adam Driver, who will most likely be the film’s villain.

It’s difficult to know who exactly was speaking over the beginning and end of the trailer, but it’s definitely sparked some conversation on the web, and we look forward to finding out who actually did the voiceover. He does sound very menacing, so we have to imagine it’s a villain of sorts with dark power coursing through his veins.
