The controversial new lightsaber design, seen in the first trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, was influenced by famed Apple designer Jony Ive. Find out how he assisted director J.J. Abrams during its creation.

The man behind Apple’s iPhone, iPad, and many other popular products, was apparently behind some of the new lightsaber designs. Director J.J. Abrams was assisted by Jony Ive when creating the unique lightsaber, and gave the director a few suggestions.

Via a New Yorker profile of the Apple designer, who is currently senior VP of design, it’s revealed that Abrams received “very specific” design suggestions from Ive, and a few made it into the final look.

While Ive didn’t come up with the cross guard that had everyone talking, he was behind the main blade’s less solid look. Ive says, “I thought it would be interesting it if were less precise and just a little bit more spitty. I felt it should be more analog and more primitive and I think in that way, somehow more ominous.”

This makes us wonder how different the Jedi lightsaber will look, and whether it will have the similar pulsing/jagged look that the Sith’s lightsaber, since Ive seems to suggest that the reason for the breaks in the light were to give off a more “ominous” tone.

Personally, this writer likes the design, and while it does seem to have some practical issues in the crossbar, it looks interesting and unique. J.J. Abrams recently discussed the controversy surrounding the new design on the red carpet, and he said we “have no idea” how many different responses he received on the new take of the old lightsaber we’ve become familiar with.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will hit theaters December 18, 2015.
