Star Wars: The Force Awakens has a massively talented cast, and Andy Serkis is finally revealing who he’ll be playing, and if he’s playing multiple characters.

The voiceover at the beginning of Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ first teaser trailer was quite difficult to decipher. We heard what sounds a bit like a raspy Benedict Cumberbatch, or Andy Serkis depending on who you asked, but it was most likely going to be the film’s villain.

Turns out, it was Andy Serkis, and now he’s talking about his character in Star Wars: The Force Awakens with Entertainment Weekly. First off, Serkis confirmed that it was his voice in the trailer saying, “That is the character,” Serkis says, adding that the gravelly, ominous voice is entirely organic. “There’s no digital manipulation. That’s just me.”

It’s certainly interesting that the voice hasn’t been altered digitally, as it was incredibly hard to find out whose voice it was. We know Serkis is incredible with voices, as we’ve seen recently in The Hobbit films, as well as in the new Planet of the Apes films.

While we’ve been hoping to hear more about his character, the actor says, “I have to be very careful about how I answer these questions. The character… He’s been through some stuff.” This is interesting, as we know this character is probably on the dark side, and now we know that he’s most likely an older character who has “been through some stuff.”

When Serkis was asked whether or not he plays multiple characters, as was rumored online, the actor says, “No that’s not true at all. I can say I only play one character.” We think this most likely came from the fact that Serkis often plays multiple CGI characters in films, as he played Kong, as well as a real character in Peter Jackson’s King Kong.

As for whether the character in Star Wars: The Force Awakens is CGI or not, Serkis says that he can’t say much. Serkis says, with a massive grin, “I can’t say a single thing about that. I’m sorry! These things will all come out in the fullness of time, I promise.”

So while he can’t tell us too many details concerning his character, at least we know that he’ll only be playing one character, and it’s probably going to be a villain of sorts. It’s definitely interesting to find out that he’s “been through a lot,” which could mean that he plays an older villain.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens will hit theaters Christmas 2015 and was directed by J.J. Abrams. Let us know who you think Andy Serkis will be playing in the new film.
