The 2016 Star Wars spinoff film has found a new screenwriter.

A few weeks ago, Gary Whitta exited his role as screenwriter on the yet-to-be-titled Star Wars spinoff film coming from Godzilla director Gareth Edwards.

According to The Hollywood Reporter (and their trustworthy sources), Lucasfilm and Disney are close to hiring Chris Weitz to come in and fill that vacant screenwriting role.

Weitz is a screenwriter whose most notable acclaim came from his About a Boy adapted screenplay that landed him an Oscar nomination. He’s only written two screenplays since that 2002 film — The Golden Compass and this year’s upcoming Cinderella — but he also works as a director and an author. He’s perhaps best known for directing The Twilight Saga: New Moon and The Golden Compass. His most directorial project was the 2011 film A Better Life.

The Star Wars film that Weitz will write is currently in the early stages of casting. Last week actresses screen tested for a lead role in the film. It’s not known what part was tested for, but it is believed that Tatiana Maslany, Rooney Mara, Kate Mara, and Felicity Jones were among the actresses that tested.

In the coming months we should learn who will star in the film, and, hopefully, who will be the subject of the film. Rumors have been flying in recent months claiming that the film could center around a young Han Solo, Boba Fett, both characters, and completely unrelated characters, too. Ultimately, we just won’t know the subject of the film until it’s revealed officially.
