Disney CEO Bob Iger has discussed cutting the pace of upcoming Star Wars films, and making Deadpool an… Avenger?

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter in a wide-ranging interview, Iger addressed the new reality of content-saturation in his most popular properties.

Iger says that he was responsible for making “the timing decision” on scheduling a new Star Wars film for release every year. The choice initially seemed like a dream come true for Star Wars fans, but while the median remains positive, it turns out that Star Wars fatigue really is a thing for many consumers.

“As I look back, I think the mistake that I made — I take the blame — was a little too much, too fast,” Iger admits, adding that fans “can expect some slowdown” in the rapid pace of films.

But don’t worry about going back to the dark times, where there was little new Star Wars to be had at all. The slowdown, Iger promises, “doesn’t mean we’re not going to make films. J.J. [Abrams] is busy making [Episode] IX. We have creative entities, including [Game of Thrones creators David] Benioff and [D.B.] Weiss, who are developing sagas of their own, which we haven’t been specific about. And we are just at the point where we’re going to start making decisions about what comes next after [Abram’s Skywalker Saga.]”

“But,” Iger says, “I think we’re going to be a little bit more careful about volume and timing. And the buck stops here on that.”

Meanwhile, over at Disney’s other billion-dollar entertainment property, plans are in motion to incorporate the Marvel properties owned by Fox into those owned by Disney. Asked if Marvel will incorporate the X-Men into their sprawling cinematic universe, Iger had the following to say:

“I think it only makes sense. I want to be careful here because of what’s been communicated to the Fox folks, but I think they know. It only makes sense for Marvel to be supervised by one entity. There shouldn’t be two Marvels.”

Asked specifically about whether Deadpool could become an Avenger in this brave new world, Bob Iger demurred… sort of.

Marvel head Kevin Feige, he says, “has got a lot of ideas. I’m not suggesting that’s one of them. But who knows?”

We know, Bob. We know.
