Ron Howard will be taking over as director of the untitled Han Solo film after Lord and Miller’s departure.

Ron Howard, an Academy Award winning director, is Lucasfilm’s choice to right the ship (er, Millennium Falcom?) after the studio fired Phil Lord and Chris Miller from the project.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy seems to reference the film’s previous direction in her official announcement.

“At Lucasfilm, we believe the highest goal of each film is to delight, carrying forward the spirit of the saga that George Lucas began forty years ago,” Kennedy says. “With that in mind, we’re thrilled to announce that Ron Howard will step in to direct the untitled Han Solo film. We have a wonderful script, an incredible cast and crew, and the absolute commitment to make a great movie. Filming will resume the 10th of July.”

Howard’s years of experience (A Beautiful Mind and Apollo 13 are among his many credits) will presumably help soothe the set after the firing. Lord and Miller were let go with mere weeks left to principal photography; reportedly, the new director will meet with the cast and screen what exists of the Han Solo film to best complete the project.

The untitled Han Solo film stars Alden Ehrenreich as the title character and Donald Glover as Lando Calrissian. Emilia Clarke, Woody Harrelson, and Thandie Newton also star in as-yet-unnamed roles.

Lord and Miller’s firing sent rumors buzzing through the shocked Star Wars fandom, with fans puzzling over the highly unusual decision. According to THR, the matter came down to conflict between Lord and Miller and Han Solo screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan. Lucasfilm chose to back Kasdan, who has also written The Empire Strikes Back and The Force Awakens.

Ron Howard has been previously connected to Lucasfilm and was apparently a choice to direct The Phantom Menace. But let’s not dwell on what could have been, as Howard turns his attention to another turbulent film.

The untitled Han Solo film will be released on May 25, 2018.
