Felicity Jones stars in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story the first Star Wars anthology film. Watch the trailer here!

Although Rogue One has been under way for a long time, until now all we had to go on was one awesome cast photo.

We know the Star Wars anthology movie takes place between the events of Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope (set shortly before Episode IV), and follows a team of rebels who set out to steal the plans for the first Death Star.

But… that’s about all we knew. Until now!

The first trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story shows off the team, and offers a few pleasant surprises!

In the trailer we meet Jyn (Felicity Jones), who is selected for a rebel mission. And it looks like this heroine might just dabble in the Dark Side herself.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is directed by Gareth Edwards and also stars Ben Mendelsohn, Forest Whitaker, Alan Tudyk, Mads Mikkelsen, Donnie Yen and Diego Luna.

This is very much a standalone film and we don’t expect any of the major players for the original Star Wars trilogy to be digitally inserted into the background (although this writer is still holding out for a campy Luke Skywalker cameo). But the characters in masks — specifically Boba Fett and Darth Vader — are a different matter. We can’t wait to see how Rogue One plans to tie its story into mainstream movie canon with callbacks and cameos!

But just like The Force Awakens, we’re fully expecting Rogue One to make us invested in this brand new cast of characters, a rag-tag group of rogues that share more than the obvious similarity to Firefly.

With Felicity Jones front and center, expect another prominent female lead character to rival Rey, and hopefully get her own line of merchandising to boot.

We’ll find out when the movie opens in theaters on December 16, 2016!
