The Rogue One: A Star Wars Story trailer raised a lot of questions. Like, could lead character Jyn Erso be Rey’s mother? Daisy Ridley weighs in on the theory!

We’re still blown away by the trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which introduced new Star Wars heroine Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones).

Set shortly before the events of A New Hope, the Star Wars anthology film follows a group of rebels as they set out to steal the plans for the Death Star.

While this writer immediately assumed that Jyn Erso’s hint of a dark side would eventually lead to her transformation into Captain Phasma (what? It could happen), most other fans were united in the theory that Jyn is the mother of The Force Awakens heroine Rey (Daisy Ridley).

It certainly would dispel the ‘only Skywalkers have the Force’ trope that would occur if Rey were Luke or Leia’s daughter, and it would be nice if Rey’s parents were someone we knew — without it being too out-of-left-field.

But don’t be so quick to make assumptions just based on their looks!

“Just because she’s white and got brown hair, do you know what I mean? Like, it doesn’t mean she’s my mum,” Daisy Ridley told MTV during the MTV Movie Awards (where she won for Breakout Performer, and The Force Awakens won Movie of the Year).

“I also don’t know if that will work out time-wise, because I’m trying to think about how much time has gone. I don’t know. Maybe she is,” she cheekily concludes, adding that she doesn’t even think Rey’s parentage is that big of a deal (has she met fandom?).

In terms of the timeline however, it does actually work out. If we assume Jyn is in her 20s during Rogue One, she’d be about 5-10 years older than Luke Skywalker, who was in his late teens at the time of A New Hope. Rey is in her early 20s during The Force Awakens, which means Jyn would have had her in her 30s or 40s. Perfectly plausible.

Revealing the main protagonist of Rogue One to be Rey’s mother would also be a neat way to connect the anthology film to the main Star Wars franchise, Rogue One then being to Rey what the prequel trilogy was to Luke and Leia (but hopefully it’ll be less painful to watch).

If the reveal of Rey’s parentage came in Rogue One, Lucasfilm could also tell her backstory without actually having to make a big deal about it in Episode VIII (so the main trilogy could continue to look ahead, rather than to the past).

On the other hand, fans are already calling foul, thinking it too clunky for the two new heroines to be related just because they happen to look alike.

But wherever you stand, you can’t deny the anagram of it all. Jyn Erso = Rey Son J. It’s totally obvious, guys.
