The final film in the Star Wars Skywalker saga Force-choked the competition at the box office in its opening weekend.

The numbers are in, and it looks like the Force of the movie going public was definitely with Star Wars this weekend. According to Box Office Mojo, the movie brought in $176 million at the domestic box office, and $373 million worldwide.

While this unfortunately falls short of the domestic opening weekend totals brought in by its Star Wars predecessors, The Force Awakens ($248 million) and The Last Jedi ($220 million), The Rise of Skywalker still easily took the weekend at the box office in terms of its competition.

Cats, which also opened this weekend, brought in an embarassing $6.5 million domestically. Frozen II is still adding to its $1 billion+ total with another $12 million, and Jumanji: The Next Level took second place with $26 million, a full $150 million under Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

It’s expected that the box office numbers for the latest Star Wars film, which concludes a nine movie story, will continue to rise over the holiday season. Although critics have not been kind to it, scoring it at only 57% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences give it 86%. As more people see it and enjoy it, the hype will only rise!
