A new featurette (re)introduces fans to Captain Rex and the clone troopers as they join the action of Star Wars Rebels season 2.

The video elaborates on the origin of the clones, first seen in Star Wars: Attack of the Clones, and follows their story through The Clone Wars animated series. Showrunner Dave Filoni and actor Dee Bradley Baker (who provides the voice for every clone in the series) discuss the past and future of these complicated characters – and tease potential conflict with the cast of Star Wars Rebels.

Star Wars Rebels season 2, episode 3, “The Lost Commanders,” will introduce three troopers who many fans know from the days of The Clone Wars.

Rex, the apparent leader of the group, was a particular friend to Ahsoka Tano during the war against the Separatists. Along with the grizzled captain is Wolffe, described by Baker as “a darker clone,” and Gregor, who – though heroic – has grown “a little rickety,” Baker observes. “He’s a little off base!”

This triumvirate of former soldiers may have been left in peace recently, but Rex and his friends will have to come out of retirement when Ahsoka sends the crew of the Ghost to find them.

“Ezra finds Rex really interesting,” says Filoni. Ezra’s master, however, is a different story. Having barely survived Order 66 – Emperor Palpatine’s terrible command to the clone to wipe out the Jedi Order – Kanan will grapple with serious distrust of Rex and his fellow clones.

“He lived through it, he saw all of his friends eliminated,” Filoni says. “Ezra, he doesn’t even really know what [Order 66] is.”

According to Baker, it seems that the dislike between Jedi and clone may be mutual.

“Rex thinks that he’s seen better [Jedi] and worked with better,” Baker says – though he offers an illuminating kernel of information that may lead to peace between the two. Apparently, Rex, Wolffe, and Gregor “were not involved with Order 66.”

Another clip released earlier this month from “The Lost Commanders” sets up the search for Rex and his fellows – and previews the distrust that will loom between the designated enemies.

Of Star Wars Rebels season 2, Disney XD says “past lives will be revealed and the destiny of our heroes will be changed forever.”

“The transformative new season resumes with Imperial oppression on Lothal growing stronger,” the synopsis continues, “and the rebels seeking out new allies and additional resources to sustain their fight against the evil Empire. With the help of Ahsoka Tano, the crew of the Ghost enlists some old friends: ex-clone troopers who fought in the Clone Wars.”

But for better or worse, there must be balance in the between the light and the dark.

“As the rebels grow in number, so do their enemies,” Disney XD says. “New Inquisitors are dispatched by Darth Vader and sent to crush any threat of rebellion. Through dangerous rescue missions, thrilling space chases, and spectacular lightsaber duels – the bond of our rebel crew will be put to the test like never before.”

Star Wars Rebels season 2, episode 3, “The Lost Commanders,” airs on Oct. 14 at 9:30 p.m. on Disney XD.
