We may have had our suspicions about the “Old Master” in the trailer for the latter half of Rebels season 2, but now it’s confirmed. Darth Maul is back.

The exclusive first look at the Star Wars: Rebels finale debuted over on EW, finally confirming what we’d all been eagerly anticipating — that Darth Maul was once again returning to our screens.

Maul cuts a shadowy figure in the clip, as he leads Ezra through the ruins of a Sith temple, deep under the surface of Malachor — we know the Scourge of Malachor is canon, but could we be one step closer to confirmation of the Knights of the Old Republic games also being canon? — and it doesn’t take Ezra long to realize something isn’t quite right with his guide.

Of course, nothing is ever simple in the Star Wars universe. After rightly recognizing that Maul is a former Sith Lord, Ezra is summarily informed that he’s neither on the side of the Dark or the Light. With the aftermath of The Clone Wars weighing heavily on him — both in respect to his abandonment by his Master, and the loss of his brother — it’s no wonder that Maul has so much pent up resentment.

Maul may tell Ezra that he has “nothing,” but we’re not so inclined to believe him. Maul has always been formidable, one not to be reckoned with, so we hope Ezra doesn’t underestimate him — even if he’s being cooperative for now. Revenge is a powerful motivator, after all, and the Empire is still his enemy.

Whilst speaking with EW, Sam Witwer (the voice of Darth Maul) said of the front Maul will potentially be putting up, “What is just a lie in terms of his behavior and what is actually the truth? People were commenting when we were recording the episode that they’d never seen a sincere, sweet Darth Maul [Laughs]. You know kind of a sweet, old man.”

“To lie that convincingly, he has to understand the emotions he’s hitting. And in order to understand them, he must possess them in some degree,” Witwer continued. “So in order to portray that level of sincerity, there’s got be some piece of him that is actually sincere.”

Sincere? We’ll believe he knows how to play that part, but whether he’s being genuinely sincere with Ezra will remain to be seen when the finale hits our screens next week.

The hour-long Star Wars: Rebels season 2 finale airs March 30, at 9 p.m. on Disney XD.
