We already caught you up on where we last left the characters we first met in The Force Awakens. Now we’re going to introduce you to the newcomers.

Though we won’t be meeting nearly as many new characters as we did in The Force Awakens, there are still a few fresh faces joining the Star Wars universe. Some we’ve already met in the books, but some we’ll be seeing for the first time in The Last Jedi.

There may be some mild spoilers within. But this is what we know about Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo, Rose Tico and DJ.

Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo

We first met Amilyn Holdo in Claudia Grey’s novel, Leia: Princess of Alderaan. Then an Apprentice Legislature for the Imperial Senate, she became a close friend and confidant of Leia’s — and one of the few privy to Leia’s involvement in the Rebel Alliance.

What we know about Amilyn Holdo, and her role in The Last Jedi, is that she will take on a leadership position in the Resistance, following the assault on Starkiller Base. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Laura Dern said that Holdo would “shake things up,” and would clash with Poe Dameron in particular. Holdo is more of a strategist, versus Poe’s instinct to want to take the fight directly to the First Order.

Dern credited Rian Johnson for his juxtaposition of Holdo’s soft femininity, with her strong leaderships skills. Speaking at The Last Jedi global press event, Dern said, “I just want to pay tribute to Rian [Johnson] for being one of the most brilliantly subversive filmmakers I’ve ever been able to bear witness to.”

“In the case of the look of my character, I was moved by the fact that he really wanted her strength to first lead with a very deep femininity. To see a powerful female character also be feminine is something that moves away from a stereotype that’s sometimes perceived, in strong female characters must be like the boys.”

Rose Tico

Where Rey was the “no one” of The Force Awakens, Kelly Marie Tran’s Rose will be stepping into that role when The Last Jedi hits our screens. A maintenance worker in the Resistance, Rose is used to operating in the background and never in the spotlight.

In the wake of the assault on Starkiller Base, and Finn’s involvement, Rose will look up to him — seeing him as the “big deal” he touted himself as when we first met him. Through their interactions, Rose will challenge Finn’s reluctance to be a hero, and push him to be and do better — much in the way that Rey did in the first movie of this trilogy.

Together, Finn and Rose will be embarking on an undisclosed mission to Canto Bight, a casino planet, pushing Rose out of her comfort zone and into a more active role in the fight against the First Order.

Also of note is that Rose has a sister, Paige, who is a gunner for the Resistance. Paige is part of the Cobalt squadron, and there will be a novel focusing on both her, and Rose, released following the premiere of The Last Jedi.

DJ

DJ is perhaps the most mysterious of all the new characters, and very little light has been shed on who the character is, or what role he’ll be playing in The Last Jedi.

What we do know of Benicio Del Toro’s character is as follows: His name, DJ, will have some significance within the Star Wars universe, he is neither on the side of the First Order nor the Resistance, and he is a slicer (the Star Wars version of a hacker).

We’ll first meet DJ when Finn and Rose head to Canto Bight. Whether he’ll be willing to help them is another story all together.

Which of the new characters are you most looking forward to meeting in ‘The Last Jedi’?
