Legendary actor Benicio Del Toro has been offered Star Wars: Episode VIII’s villain role.

The news comes from The Wrap, who says numerous higher ups at Disney and Lucasfilm are very interested in Del Toro securing the gig. Negotiations are currently in the “very early” stages.

As expected, details about the villainous role are light. (Heck, we barely know anything about the villain in this December’s Star Wars: Episode VII by J.J. Abrams.) However, anyone who knows Del Toro from his roles in Traffic, Snatch, The Usual Suspects, or even Guardians of the Galaxy will know that the actor will likely bring epic work to his rumored Star Wars gig.

The casting is a bit of a full circle moment for Del Toro. According to reports, the actor was originally cast in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace as Darth Maul until George Lucas cut most of the character’s lines.

Today’s report is the first casting news we’ve heard concerning the eighth Star Wars installment. Of course, it’s highly likely that lead cast members in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, like Oscar Isaac, Gwendoline Christie, Daisy Ridley, and John Boyega, are starring in the sequel too.

Star Wars: Episode VIII will open in theaters May 26, 2017 under the direction of Rian Johnson (Looper, Breaking Bad). Meanwhile, Abrams’ The Force Awakens hits theaters this Christmas.

In between The Force Awakens and Episode VIII, Lucasfilm will release the first Star Wars Anthology titled Rogue One in 2016.
