Star Wars: Episode VII principal photography is imminent, and we’ve just gotten our first look from the set, a look at Chewbacca.

The Star Wars: Episode VII cast was finally announced last week, or the majority of it anyway.

We’ve known for a while that filming would commence this May, and it looks like it’s getting very close. The first set image has just been released and it features everybody’s favorite wookiee Chewbacca played by Peter Mayhew who will return for Episode VII, his fifth official time playing the character.

The following selfie exists as our first look from the set. It was released on the Star Wars instagram account and was taken by Disney CEO Bog Iger:

The image was released for the unofficial “Star Wars day,” May the 4th (be with you).

J.J. Abrams got in on the “Star Wars day” fun as well by releasing this “video selfie” (it’s called a vlog, J.J.) with his co-screenwriter Lawrence Kasdan.

While we didn’t expect Abrams to give any real information, he does reiterate here that casting is not complete. They caught a lot of fire for the announced cast not having a lot of women. It was rumored earlier that the cast was not complete and that it would include at least one more “substantial” female role. Again, it’s extremely unlikely that the role would have been added after the backlash. There’s no time to do something like that, no matter how it would affect PR. It’s interesting to see that they are still working on the script, but at this point it’s likely that that they are just tweaking and not making any substantial changes.
