Star Wars: Episode VII has already begun filming even though casting isn’t complete, Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn has revealed.

It was recently announced that filming on Star Wars: Episode VII would commence in May, and then primarily at the legendary Pinewood Studios in London. A later report said that filming would begin on May 14, on location in Morocco (and perhaps Tunisia) for two weeks.

Surprisingly, the official announcement was wrong. Disney Studios chairman Alan Horn has revealed that filming on Star Wars: Episode VII has already begun.

The Hollywood Reporter asked Horn about the six weeks and Horn said that they “are actually shooting some of it now.”

Horn also talked about what the biggest problems have been so far.

“This is episode seven, so it takes off where six left off, and where six left off is 35 years ago by the time this is released. It’s all about the screenplay. It has to be screenplay, screenplay, screenplay. It actually is [ready] now.”

When asked about the cast, Horn revealed that the cast is not complete.

“We have a lot of them, it’s just not completely done yet. We haven’t announced.”

Horn didn’t reveal if they’re shooting anything with any major cast members that they’ve signed on, or if it is really minor footage that they’re getting at this point. The latter would make the most sense, but with the secrecy that has surrounded the film so far, the former wouldn’t be too much of a surprise either.

Casting announcements feel very imminent, but we don’t know exactly when they’ll arrive.

It was rumored that a lead actor shortlist includes Ed Speleers, John Boyega, Jesse Plemons, Matthew James Thomas, and Ray Fisher and that Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o was in the running for a female role.
