Blockbusters nowadays focus too much on CGI, but Star Wars Episode VII will go back to the basics and use more real effects.

At the Star Wars Celebration Europe convention in Essen, Germany last weekend, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said that Star Wars Episode VII, which she is producing, will cut back on the reliance on CGI:

The conversation we’re having all the time now about ‘Episode VII’ is how much CGI. We’re looking at what the early ‘Star Wars’ films did; they used real locations with special effects. So [for ‘Episode VII’] we’re going to find some very cool locations, were going to end up using every single tool in the toolbox.

In an interview with Warwick Davis (Star Wars cast member from Episode VI: Return of the Jedi and Episode 1: The Phantom Menace), Kennedy later elaborated on her desire to use real effects:

I was amazed yesterday and looking at what the fans are doing. Using model makers, using real droids, taking advantage of the artwork that you can touch and feel, we want to do that in combination with CG effects.

Star Wars fans should be excited to hear this. One of the complaints had by fans about the prequels was that they relied too much on CGI. The original trilogy was so well received in part because of the groundbreaking effects it utilized.

Also at the Star Wars Celebration, Kennedy revealed that John Williams will officially be scoring the upcoming Star Wars trilogy.
