Will Star Wars: Episode VII be ready for release in 2015? Everything will have to go perfectly from this point on for that to happen, and nothing is going perfectly right now.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Star Wars: Episode VII executive producer and LucasFilm president Kathleen Kennedy (and most of the rest of the creative team) recently asked Disney to delay the highly anticipated sequel to 2016, but Disney CEO Robert Iger denied the request.

Disney is reportedly adamant about releasing Star Wars: Episode VII in summer 2015. We have long heard rumors that it would be pushed to a Christmas 2015 release date, but Iger has a plan crafted to release the film in the summer. Though they haven’t said anything, it’s become increasingly likely that it will debut in the late summer so that it will not conflict with the May 1 release date of The Avengers: Age of Ultron.

It was announced only a week ago today that Academy Award winning screenwriter Michael Arndt would be leaving the project. Director J.J. Abrams and Lawrence Kasdan, who wrote Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, have taken over screenwriting duties. Before departing, Arndt had been working on the script almost exclusively for the past year, including 40-50 pages before the sale of LucasFilm to Disney. Insiders close to the film say the script is currently not close to being ready.

With Abrams taking over writing duties in part, he’ll have to focus his time on that aspect more than he previously would have. On the positive side, Abrams seems to be of the same mind as Disney as he too wants the film to be released by 2015.

Disney wants to keep their new mega-franchise on track. After the probable release of Star Wars: Episode VII in 2015, the eighth and ninth installments will be released in 2017 and 2019, with other, non-episodic Star Wars films released in between.
