The Doctor is in! Matt Smith is joining Star Wars: Episode IX in an important new role.

A long timey-wimey ago…

Variety reports that Matt Smith, the impish Eleventh Doctor on the BBC’s Doctor Who, will pop over to the galaxy far, far away in Star Wars: Episode IX. Unsurprisingly, few details have been released about who Smith will play in the final installment of the Skywalker Saga, but the role is reportedly significant.

Matt Smith has also made ripples playing the ethically dubious Prince Phillip in Netflix’s The Crown, a role he has now turned over to Outlander alum Tobias Menzies.

Smith joins a cast of familiar Star Wars faces, including Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Mark Hamill, Adam Driver, and Billy Dee Williams. Previously recorded footage will allow Carrie Fisher to appear in the film as well. Newcomers to the cast, along with Smith, are Kerri Russell, Naomi Ackie, and LOST’s Dominic Monaghan.

Star Wars: Episode IX is scheduled to hit theaters in December 2019.
