Carrie Fisher’s death last month was incredibly sad and shocking. As they continue to grieve the loss of their friend, Lucasfilm is now preparing to discuss what they’ll do with Princess Leia in the next two Star Wars movies.

A new report from THR sheds light on Princess Leia’s role in Star Wars Episodes 8 and 9, which are sequels to The Force Awakens.

Fisher shot “at least two key scenes” for this December’s Episode 8, which is now in post-production (they finished filming last summer). The scenes are reportedly “a Leia reunion with Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and a confrontation with Kylo Ren (Adam Driver)” after the latter killed Han Solo (Harrison Ford).

“Details of where those scenes fit into the movies remain unclear, but insiders say Leia was to have been a bigger part of Episode IX than VIII,” THR reports.

They add that Episode 9 director Colin Trevorrow is due to fly to Los Angeles next week to meet with producer and Lucasfilm head Kathleen Kennedy, where they’ll discuss options for Leia.

One option on the table is the use of CGI. “Rogue One is the road map,” said one of THR’s sources. Remember, last month’s first Star Wars spinoff brought Peter Cushing and a young Carrie Fisher back to life.

Our own speculation: With Episode 8 already shot, Lucasfilm’s main issue may only be Leia’s story in Episode 9. They might have to reduce her role to something that would only require a small appearance to write her out. But to make the Episode 9 changes natural, some adjustments may have to be made to the story in Episode 8.

It’ll be interesting to see how Lucasfilm handles the tragic loss of Carrie Fisher. And of course, they still need to mourn the loss of their friend. “People are still deeply mourning Carrie’s death over there,” THR’s source said.
