A Hypable reader recently wrote a great piece analyzing whether John Williams or J.J. Abrams’ partner Michael Giacchino will score Star Wars: Episode VII.

Now, the legendary composer is chiming in on the speculation himself.

Williams composed the Young Musician’s Foundation Debut Orchestra on February 9, and prior to performing the Star Wars theme, he made comments about recent news of the new films. “We’re about to play ‘Star Wars’ [audience interrupts with cheers] and each time we play it, I’m reminded of the first time we played it decades ago,” he said in comments which surfaced on a fan site. “Neither I, nor George, nor anyone else involved thought this would go far or in a few years there would be a sequel and I’d have to revisit the themes…and years later another trilogy. Now we’re hearing of a new set of movies coming in 2015, 2016…so I need to make sure I’m still ready to go in a few years for what I hope would be continued work with George [more cheers].”

While it’s nice to hear that Williams is enthusiastic about the idea, it appears he may not realize that George Lucas is not involved with the project.

The other problem is that Abrams has worked exclusively with Giacchino for his films, so it may be a tough call to decide who will score. If we had to guess, we would think Disney would put some pressure on Abrams to use Williams.

Perhaps Williams does know that Lucas is no longer involved with Star Wars and he was only using his name to refer to the project. If he doesn’t know, maybe when he finds out he will be less enthused about returning. Only time will tell.
