Lucasfilm and Disney have decided to hold off on re-releasing Star Wars Episodes II and III so that the franchise can focus on developing Star Wars: Episode VII.

Star Wars Episode I had been re-released in 3D in February 2012 and pulled in $23 million in the United States. It was announced in August that Episodes II and III were to open in September and October of this year.

The following statement was posted on Star Wars’ official website: “Lucasfilm has decided to postpone this fall’s scheduled release of Star Wars Episodes II and III in 3D. Given the recent development that we are moving forward with a new Star Wars trilogy, we will now focus 100 percent of our efforts on Star Wars: Episode VII in order to ensure the best possible experience for our fans. We will post further information about our 3D release plans at a later date.”

Were you planning on seeing these 3D re-releases? The films may have enjoyed a small box office boost thanks to the birth of Episodes VII through IX.

Disney announced on Friday that J.J. Abrams will helm Star Wars Episode VII. Michael Arndt, who wrote the Oscar-winning film Toy Story 3, is writing the script. Earlier today we told you Abrams hasn’t committed to the 2015 release date because he doesn’t want to rush the creative process. He’s also busy with his other projects like Star Trek and Mission: Impossible.

It’ll be interesting to see if Lucasfilm ever decides to re-release any of the previous films in 3D, considering there are now three entirely new movies on the horizon.
