Star Trek has picked the writer and director for the next movie in the franchise. Legion ‘s Noah Hawley is headed to the captain’s chair.

The Star Trek franchise isn’t going anywhere, and despite the tepid reaction to Star Trek: Beyond, another movie is in the works. While it is still early days for this next cinematic adventure with Starfleet, the movie has officially landed on the writer and director to usher in the next flick: Legion and Fargo creator Noah Hawley.

As Variety reports, the specifics of the movie are being kept under wraps. However, it is expected for Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana to return to star as Captain Kirk, Spock, and Uhura, respectively, in Hawley’s Star Trek debut.

Hawley’s Star Trek film will serve as the fourth film in the existing cinematic franchise and will be entirely separate from the other Star Trek movie Paramount is developing with Quentin Tarantino.

For those Trekkies who have been following the plight of the franchise, this isn’t the first time a fourth film in the series has been in the works. In 2018, a fourth film that featured more of Chris Hemsworth reprising his role as Captain Kirk’s father was in the works. However, the movie was ultimately shelved when all of the interested parties were unable to land on a deal.

Star Trek: Beyond hit movie theaters back in 2016, and while it didn’t meet box office expectations, it does have fair reviews from viewers. The movie has an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Hawley has had a lot of success with his work on shows like Legion and Fargo, so it will be interesting to see what he can bring into the Star Trek universe. Of course, the world of movies is a bit of a new challenge for Hawley as he recently made his feature film debut with the Natalie Portman-led film Lucy in the Sky.

We can’t wait to see what is coming in the world of the USS Enterprise, and we certainly can’t wait to hear more about Hawley’s vision for the franchise. And with the original film cast returning, this is shaping up to be a great new addition to the Star Trek franchise.
