The 40th anniversary of the release of Star Trek: The Motion Picture is coming up, and the film is celebrating by returning to theaters.

Star Trek: The Motion Picture first opened in movie theaters back in December of 1979, 40 years ago. With that big anniversary coming up, it’s only right to celebrate that monumental release, so the film will be returning to movie theaters for a limited time.

According to Variety, Fathom Events and Paramount Pictures have arranged screenings of the film at movie theaters across the country on September 15 and 18. This will be the first time the movie has returned to theaters since 1979.

But as if that wasn’t reason enough to check out your local theater, the screening will also feature a behind-the-scenes documentary, called The Longest Trek: Writing the Motion Picture, which chronicles the process behind bringing the beloved series to the big screen.

Bringing Star Trek from television to movie theaters was a big deal and a long journey (as you’ll see in The Longest Trek), but the move paid off in a big way. The Robert Wise-directed film became the fourth-highest grossing film of the year and snagged Oscar nominations for things like Best Score, Best Visual Effects, and Best Music, and as we all know, it helped pave the way to expand the franchise into more television shows and more movies.

Obviously, getting the chance to see Star Trek: The Motion Picture on the big screen isn’t a chance any Star Trek fan should miss (especially if you haven’t seen the film in movie theaters because you weren’t alive in 1979). While you can’t yet see when and where screenings will be happening in your area, you can head to the Fathom website to enter your email for an alert when tickets go on sale.

The tickets will be officially available starting on Friday, August 2. Because screenings are only happening for two days, this one will probably sell out pretty quickly, so be sure to mark your calendars!
