Hanelle Culpepper, a veteran of Star Trek: Disovery, is set to make franchise history as the first female director to launch a new Trek series.

In Star Trek‘s 53 years on television, every series’ debut episode has exclusively been directed by a man — as well as all 13 of the franchise’s movies. Culpepper, who directed Discovery’s season 1 episode, “Vaulting Ambition,” will be in charge of the first two episodes of the still untitled Jean-Luc Picard show.

“Hanelle is a gifted and dynamic filmmaker whose directorial choices are always deeply rooted in character,” executive producer Alex Kurtzman said. “I’ve been a huge fan of her work since she started with us on Discovery, and she’s the perfect person to reintroduce the beloved character of Picard to longtime fans and new viewers alike. We’re thrilled she’s joining our Trek family on this next adventure.”

Culpepper’s second Discovery episode is slated to air on March 21. Her credits also include episodes on How to Get Away With Murder, Gotham, and Criminal Minds.

The Picard series will reintroduce the character to Trek, though he will be “radically altered” since he was last seen in Nemesis.

The Patrick Stewart-helmed series is just the first in a range of projects at work in the Trek universe. As well as the ongoing Discovery, a spinoff centered around Philippa Georgiou is also in development, plus a new animated series, continued episodes of Short Treks, and another series set in Starfleet Academy.

With all of these shows in development, Trek fans are guaranteed continued content for the foreseeable future, as well as the focus on a variety of new, and also beloved, characters.
